Well-wishers

One of my favorite movies is Iqbal. I loved the dialogue of Nasiruddin Shah when the coach of a rich player (Girsh Karnad) tries to manipulate the selection process and offers money to him for Iqbal and tries to negotiate a compromise whereby the other player will get selected this year and Iqbal next year. Then Nasiruddin Shah says "For a long time I wanted to say to everybody who pretends to be my well-wisher that go to hell". Why this well-wisher cult is so unbearable? There are two factors probably. Firstly, most of the time well-wishers just try to manipulate. They try to achieve their own goals by manipulating others. We come across many such situations everywhere. In organizations, we see similar manipulations where the employers pretend to be well-wishers and for their small benefit, they exploit the employees. Duryodhana was a wellwisher of Karna and in the process manipulated the emotions of Karna to use him against Pandavas in the battle of Kurukshetra. As long as ...

Exploitation in the name of Love

Sometime back, I was amazed to watch a video wherein an old man explained what love is. He says that often we say "I love fish" and then eat the fish. Actually, I love myself to please my senses or make my body strong. I eat the fish. Yesterday, while having discussions at J Krishnamurti Foundation, one thought really struck my mind. Chhabra sir mentioned that probably we need to learn only two subjects: mathematics and languages during school, and the rest we may learn ourselves. It made me really think and I found the statement to be quite profound.  We do not understand the true meaning of different words and that is the reason why our communication is so poor. Firstly, we do not understand ourselves because we never make an effort to find time for ourselves, to study ourselves. Secondly, even if we have little idea of what we are, we do not find the right words to express what we feel. Even if we get the right words to express ourselves, there is a lot of gap between our ...

Let the spark turn into Fire

Today I was playing with a 3-year-old kid. It was fun playing with the kid. The most wonderful thing about playing with the kids is that they are open to life. I played many tricks with the kid like to hide a coin, to hide her hankey, and she was quite attentive to find out the coin and the hankey. Then I played another trick with her to make her feel that her little wound was being cured magically. She would pay full attention to all these things for hours without showing any sign of fatigue or boredom. She was curious to know new things and explore. I don't know where this curiosity disappears in the grown-ups. Probably, the biggest difference between kids and grown-ups is that the kids live in the present moment. They are open to all the possibilities. They observe the reality as it is. While, on the other hand, as we grow up, we start talking to different people and gather their "second-hand experiences". We talk to our parents, teachers, colleagues, and other member...

Gravity of the Routine

We see so many people behaving quite erratically all around us. In fact, it appears that everybody is either exploiting or getting exploited. I get surprised to see why people do not "live and let others live". Probably, there is a fundamental problem in the way we are brought up, in fact, the way the entire society moves ahead. We are a society driven by so many fears. The fear of poverty, disrespect, exploitation, death, diseases, and so on. Inequality is so widely spread in the society. A society where few people can flaunt spending thousands of crores in the marriage of their kids, moving around in luxury cars and private jets, and owning homes worth thousands of crores. On the other hand, the majority of us are dependent on government schemes for very basic needs such as food. In such an unequal society, both the rich and the poor have great fears. The poor have fears of survival. They are not sure whether they are going to get food and shelter. They are not sure of medi...

Clarity to Confusion to greater Clarity

A dear friend discussed the post "Conflicts in a decision matrix". Was there any confusion in the mind of Rama when he made a decision to go to the forest or when he decided to find out Sita? Definitely not. There was no confusion in the mind of Rama and he took whatever was possible on Earth to find out Sita and to bring her back even if it required risking his life fighting against Ravana in Lanka. However, the same Rama when he came back from Lanka sent the same Sita to the forest just because one of his countrymen raised a suspicion on Sita. It was probably because it was Truth and Love that was the center of Rama's life and not Sita. When Ravana kidnaps Sita, Rama knows that if Ravana is not killed, he will make life on earth hell for all human beings. It was his love for fellow human beings that made him fight the battle of Lanka. Had Sita been the center of his life, he would have asked Hanumana to bring Sita back. Similarly, when he sent Sita to the forest, it was...

Conflicts in a decision matrix

We all have to make so many decisions each day and in fact each moment. What to eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Whether to go for a walk or do yoga or jogging? Whether to listen to a friend or listen to our own heart? What career to choose? Which job to take? Whom to marry? Which destination to finalize for holidaying? Whether to say "no" or not? There are so many decisions that we make each day. Obviously, we face conflicts while making these decisions.  There are people who are relatively certain of their decisions, while there are many who are quite confused while making these decisions. Is clarity of mind to make all these decisions related to spiritual evolution? It's true that a spiritually evolved human being would have greater clarity while making these decisions. However, the reverse is not true. A person who has clarity of mind, while making these decisions, need not necessarily be spiritual. The reason is quite simple. The lesser we know more certain we ar...

"Practical" viewpoint of dreams

A friend forwarded some newspaper clipping wherein an author is saying that the "follow your dreams" being encouraged by few motivators is actually based on survivor bias. We see only a few who have failed to follow their dreams and a majority of whom we know are the ones who have successfully followed their dreams. That is why we get biased and decide to "follow our dreams".  That appears to me quite a narrow and restricted view of life. Are we following our dreams to get the comforts and pleasures? Is there any motive behind our dreams? We just enjoy our dreams. Did Einstien dream of unraveling the mysteries of the universe to get money and power? Did Stephen Hawkins dream of understanding the mysteries of the black holes and parallel universe to have money and power? He can not even properly stand and yet despite all his physical limitations he dreamed to know the mysteries of the universe. That is because he loved to do that. People who have never experienced lo...

Workability

Today, I was discussing workability with some of my friends. As I understood, workability is all about looking at things from a different perspective. For example, if there is a clash of egos between two individuals, and both of them are stuck on their stand, then if somebody tries to show them an alternative perspective, say for example that both of them have come together for the organizational welfare, that may help both of them looking afresh and it may resolve the issues. It may work in relations when spouses are fighting their ego battle and somebody makes them realize the larger purpose of the welfare of the kids and they look at their relationship from that perspective and strike out workability. There appear to be two fundamental assumptions behind the concept of workability. First, there is a hierarchy of the goals in life. Say, for example, in the instance referred above, the individuals fighting in the organization have two conflicting goals viz "to prove to be right...

Mad Fixation, Confusion, and Divine Intervention

I do not understand why we have made this world as it is today? Why is everyone seeking some or the other thing in this world? Why "becoming" is the buzzword and "being" is not sufficient to live our lives? Everyone wants to become someone or the other. If a few just want to live their lives, all these seekers somehow use them for their ambitions. Probably, in the race to "become", people become so obsessed with their ambitions that everyone around them just becomes a tool to fulfill their ambitions. They hold on to their ambitions so tightly that in the process they use almost all their relationships.  In the battle of Kurukshetra, Duryodhana was so obsessed with the ambitions that he forced Bhishma, Dronacharya, Karna, and many other people to fight the battle, and eventually all these people lost their lives. He never had any conflict, while on the other hand, even though Pandavas were fighting the battle for the right cause, Arjuna had a conflict that ...

Hard work for Comfort?

If we choose the wrong path, we keep traveling all our lives and yet may not reach the destination. That is why awareness is very crucial. No doubt hard work is required even when we choose the right path, but hard work on a wrong path does not lead us to our destination. One of the biggest problems while choosing the path of life is that when we make such choices, we have a very limited perspective and have no idea about the possibilities. For example, in my entire family and town, there was no civil servant, so I never heard of what it meant till I started a job and my employer guided me in the preparation.  Our mind works on "natural intelligence" the same way as "artificial intelligence" works. AI picks the clues from our search history and starts showing whatever we like. I experimented with the short YouTube videos yesterday. AI keeps calculating the duration of the videos I watch and the type of videos I watch for a longer duration are repeated more often it ...

Easy and Tough choices

We always have easy and tough choices in our lives. The easy options are generally less fulfilling and the difficult ones are more fulfilling. The reason is quite simple. We all have a limited life and time is the essence of life. Generally, in a particular moment, we have very limited attention at the moment. The task at hand generally does not require complete attention. That is why a significant portion of our attention remains in the background thinking about the past and the future. This means that we remain aware of only a fraction of the possibilities during our lives and that is the reason why we live only a very small fraction of our lives and the rest of the time we remain unconscious. The proportion of the time, we are aware of the present moment decides how fulfilled our life is. The more the proportion of time, we are aware of the present moment the more fulfilled our life is. For example, when I started preparation for the civil services, it was so challenging and so many...
