Do we ever understand the worth of self?

When we take up employment in an organisation, we are expected to carry out certain tasks and handle different responsibilities. We keep playing these roles and fulfilling the responsibilities, and sometimes get fed up and want an escape. A pleasure trip, a sabbatical, a few days of leave, a home visit, and so on. After the escape, we are back at work and go through the same frustration every day. Some people are more intelligent. They make their workplace and their lives enjoyable. If you can't run away from dirt, enjoy it. People enjoy office politics, bickering, sycophancy, talking rubbish about their colleagues, and poking into the personal lives of others. Very few like to explore and create new possibilities.

Life is what it is. It has a lot to offer in every situation, and yet it may be quite frustrating. We take up certain roles, both consciously and unconsciously. The moment we are born into a family, we assume certain roles. The role of a son, daughter, sister, brother, and so on. We may take these roles as an employment and keep doing them in a routine manner; we may feel suffocated and frustrated and keep looking for escapes; we may try to find joy in the routine and may make mental stories; we may try to spice up a little bit by setting certain targets, having parties, and trying to find meaning in the routine. We may also try to explore new possibilities, experiment, and create something new.

Most people spend their entire lives in employment mode and sometimes look for escapes. A few make up mental stories to make life in employment mode feel enjoyable. Very few can enter exploration mode. It's very difficult to rise high because when one tries to rise high, he has to work against gravity and the body at times gets exhausted. When we do a tough trek, the body gets exhausted by the end of the day and yet some people do it again and again. Not because they are stronger than others or have a different genetic makeup, but because they have very high self-worth and cannot waste their life in employment mode.

Why do many live life in an employment mode, running after escapes and finding some enjoyment here and there? How can some of us switch on exploration mode? Once we really think about "Who am I?" and enquire into the true meaning of life, mental stories fall apart. We see the reality. We see that life as employment is just propaganda, a story being told to all immature minds so that they start believing in the same, and a few get people like robots to just make profits so that they can enjoy their lives based on the mental stories they have made about enjoyment. Both the exploitors and exploited are actually acting stupidly. On the other hand, when a person actually thinks, "Who am I?" and understands that I am full of infinite possibilities, why would he waste his life in routine? He would like to create one thing or another in every moment. He understands the value of his life, and that's why he can't live it in am employment mode. Once somebody discovers the secrets of atomic energy, he will build a nuclear reactor rather than burning wood for energy.

Field of Awareness

I presented a paper on Vipassana long back at Delhi University, and at that time, a professor there asked me a question: "Who realises the temporality of the sensations when we practice Vipassana: the mind or something else?" That question stayed with me. I told him about my experience in Estonia. Once, I went on an office tour in Estonia, where it was extremely cold at around -15 degrees. I walked outdoors for quite a long time and developed severe stomach pain. With no medicines available to me and no doctor to visit, I sat in Vipassana and began observing sensations. After about an hour of observation, the pain disappeared. I told him that I don't know whether that was a realisation of the mind or something else, but the same brain that experienced pain some time back had no pain after some time.  The question is who was feeling the pain and where that pain disappeared after observation. When we sit in Vipassana, our minds are full of so many thoughts. Usually, our m...

A "home" decorated with "bonsai"

Somebody gifted a plant sometime back. When I look at the plant on the Table, it appears to me as if the plant had the potential to grow into a big tree, but we confined the little plant within the limits of the pot, and it has grown strangely. It has a thick stem but has small leaves and branches. We have designed the plants to look the way we like. What "I" want is more important than what the "plant" is. The plant will grow the way "I" like it to grow. And then, "I" would also claim that "I" love the plant.  Yesterday, I went to a coaching institute to get some test series for a competitive exam for my daughter. The guide there spoke for around 40-45 minutes on the risks and chances of getting selected in different competitive examinations. So much competition. Fear is instilled into the minds of the students from the very beginning. Everything is around fear. If they are not able to get enrolment in a professional course , they wi...

Kurukshetra Within Ourselves

I watched the Netflix series Kurukshetra today. It's a wonderfully made series and, in fact, made me recall my childhood series of the Mahabharata that used to be telecast on DD. Mahabharata is magical. The most magical thing about the Mahabharata is that it has no straitjacket definition of Dharma . The entire battle of Kurukshetra is for Dharma, and everybody feels that he is fighting the battle for Dharma.  When Bhishma realises that Vichitravirya needs to be married, he goes to the Swamvara of Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika and forcefully brings them to Hastinapur . Ambika and Ambalika are married to Vichitravirya, while Amba carries out penance to take revenge on Bhishma. Why did Bhishma bring these three girls against their wishes to Hastinapur? If Vichitravirya wanted to marry, he should have shown courage and participated in the Swamvara. After all, Swamvara meant that the girls wanted to marry the most courageous person. Bhishma deprived them of their rights for his attac...
