The Space is Unaffected

Space remains unaffected by the winds and the clouds. A low-pressure zone attracts the winds from the mountains nearby. Breeze flows from the ocean to the land in the evening. Clouds come and go with the winds, and sometimes rain also. The weather keeps changing, but the sky remains unaffected.

We, too, are like the sky. Whenever there is a low-pressure zone, because there is some space, as the thoughts we were holding on to get dropped, we invite new thoughts from the people we come across, the new YouTube videos we watch, the new experiences we encounter, and the new books we read, and all these new thoughts come like a breeze in our life and redefine us. Along with the thoughts come the water vapour that gets condensed as it gets favourable conditions, and we experience rainfall. We, too, undergo many experiences of pain and pleasure throughout our lives. But the sky is unaffected by all these experiences.

There may be rough weather in some places, and it may be bright and sunny in others. That's just weather and temporary. Some places have more storms and hurricanes than others because of their geography. Similarly, some of us have to undergo many turbulent experiences, while some live a calmer and more eventless life. But the sky remains unaffected irrespective of the climate. We may compare why it is so cold in Russia and so hot in Australia. It means nothing because after six months, it will be cold in Australia and hot in Russia. Comparison of weather across the globe and across different times of the year does not mean anything. Its reality of a place at a particular time. Similarly, our inner weather is the reality at the moment. Our mind may be full of thoughts or clean, that's just a momentary reality. It may be a high-pressure zone or low pressure zone, it may be stormy, or there may be a gentle breeze; that's just the reality of the present moment. The sky remains unaffected. We may also be experiencing full to just vent out or light to invite new thoughts, that's just the reality of this moment. The very next moment, that will change again.

The space is undivided. The space above India is no different from the space above the USA. The space of the Earth is no different from the space of any other planet. Everybody is united at the level of space. It is the land and the atmosphere that are different. Now, it is up to us as to how much we identify with the land and atmosphere. The more we stay aware of our true nature baing the space, the more we are unaffected by the weather. The land will keep changing form. What were oceans a few million years back are now mountains, and they will again be oceans. Where there used to be green fields, there have now been converted into concrete buildings, which will fall on the ground in due course. The weather will keep changing. If we remember our nature as space, it does not matter. Not so that we run away and stop experiencing, but in the depths of our heart, we remember that we are space, unaffected by the weather. When we meet a person who stays in a very high-pressure zone, full of something to just vent out, we don't offer a low-pressure zone to engage with them. The winds do not get formed. We are unaffected. We enjoy the grandness of the space. The never-ending space, which is full of all the possibilities.

Field of Awareness

I presented a paper on Vipassana long back at Delhi University, and at that time, a professor there asked me a question: "Who realises the temporality of the sensations when we practice Vipassana: the mind or something else?" That question stayed with me. I told him about my experience in Estonia. Once, I went on an office tour in Estonia, where it was extremely cold at around -15 degrees. I walked outdoors for quite a long time and developed severe stomach pain. With no medicines available to me and no doctor to visit, I sat in Vipassana and began observing sensations. After about an hour of observation, the pain disappeared. I told him that I don't know whether that was a realisation of the mind or something else, but the same brain that experienced pain some time back had no pain after some time.  The question is who was feeling the pain and where that pain disappeared after observation. When we sit in Vipassana, our minds are full of so many thoughts. Usually, our m...

A "home" decorated with "bonsai"

Somebody gifted a plant sometime back. When I look at the plant on the Table, it appears to me as if the plant had the potential to grow into a big tree, but we confined the little plant within the limits of the pot, and it has grown strangely. It has a thick stem but has small leaves and branches. We have designed the plants to look the way we like. What "I" want is more important than what the "plant" is. The plant will grow the way "I" like it to grow. And then, "I" would also claim that "I" love the plant.  Yesterday, I went to a coaching institute to get some test series for a competitive exam for my daughter. The guide there spoke for around 40-45 minutes on the risks and chances of getting selected in different competitive examinations. So much competition. Fear is instilled into the minds of the students from the very beginning. Everything is around fear. If they are not able to get enrolment in a professional course , they wi...

Kurukshetra Within Ourselves

I watched the Netflix series Kurukshetra today. It's a wonderfully made series and, in fact, made me recall my childhood series of the Mahabharata that used to be telecast on DD. Mahabharata is magical. The most magical thing about the Mahabharata is that it has no straitjacket definition of Dharma . The entire battle of Kurukshetra is for Dharma, and everybody feels that he is fighting the battle for Dharma.  When Bhishma realises that Vichitravirya needs to be married, he goes to the Swamvara of Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika and forcefully brings them to Hastinapur . Ambika and Ambalika are married to Vichitravirya, while Amba carries out penance to take revenge on Bhishma. Why did Bhishma bring these three girls against their wishes to Hastinapur? If Vichitravirya wanted to marry, he should have shown courage and participated in the Swamvara. After all, Swamvara meant that the girls wanted to marry the most courageous person. Bhishma deprived them of their rights for his attac...
