People in general appear to be quite clear in their motivations. There are very few who are confused in this world. Most people are sure that they want money, power, and positions. There may be little confusion here or there about the best course of action to get all these things. However, there is no confusion about the goals as such.
That is the reason that most people do not wish to move along the path of spirituality. It is such an alien concept to them. They do not feel the need at all. They are happy in their world which has comforts and pleasures. If they face a loss of money, they try to find different ways and means to earn money. If they lose power, they try to gather power through other methods. However, even for a moment, they do not have time to rethink their goals in life.
After all, nobody except Arjuna was confused in the battle of Kurukshetra. It was out of that confusion that Arjuna approached Krishna and Krishna guided him through Bhagwad Geeta. Yudhistira, Bhima, Nakul, Sehdev. Bhishma, Drona, Duryodhana, and Karna, did not have any confusion. If confusion helps us connect to the divine, then why is confusion considered to be so undesirable in the world?
It is probably because the confusion of Arjuna was a result of the battle between his mind and his heart. His mind wanted to take revenge since injustice had been done against the Pandavas by the Kauravas. He wanted to take revenge for the insult to his wife Draupadi. However, his heart was somehow reminding him that he would end up killing his own cousins, teachers, and family members in the process. Others just muted the voice of their hearts. That is what happens in life. People who set money, power, and positions as their life goals mute the voices of their hearts. That is the reason why they are conflict-free and slowly become thick-skinned and insensitive. That is the reason why they are so clear and certain of their goals.
What purpose is confusion serving in that case? Confusion is the first step to bring greater clarity. Till that confusion arises, we are just fixated on whatever limit we consider to be our life goal. We have stopped being attentive to anything contradictory. However, when our awareness widens, for the first time, we listen to the alternative views and that creates confusion. We become aware of deeper layers of our hearts and minds. There are layers and layers of unconscious that we are not generally aware of. Once we listen to these layers, we become aware of the contradictions and these contradictions bring confusion.
In that state of confusion, initially, we try to resolve these confusions by using our limited minds. However, as our awareness increases, the confusions between the heart and mind widen and the intellect finds itself incapable of resolving the conflicts. In that state, we look forward to some Guru or the divine. We understand the limitations of the human intellect and that understanding allows us to surrender to the divine. That surrender allows us to take some time off from the fixation on the thoughts. In that state of surrender, the divine guides us. When the divine guides us the body as well as the mind listens quietly to what He says. This brings absolute clarity. A clarity that is not the result of the dominance of the brain over the heart, but rather a clarity within which the heart and brain both merge completely. They both align with reality and have no questions or confusion like Arjuna after experiencing the Divyaroopa of Krishna and listening to Bhagwad Geeta. However, that demands complete trust like the trust Arjuna had in Krishna which made him choose Krishna over His entire army.
