Causal energy is very powerful. Many people build big empires out of this energy. This energy comes out of the desire to grow bigger and stronger. Human beings have so many fears the biggest fear being the fear of death. There may be three different responses to these fears. First I want to protect and preserve myself and therefore I play defensive. Somehow trying to protect my existence against the attacks of the opponents and circumstances. This is a Tamasik approach to life. The second approach may be the attacking one. I try to expand myself. I attack the other person before the other person attacks me. That's a Rajasik approach. People with the rajasik approach expand their existence. They build empires and gather money and power so as to feel safer. The third approach is the Satvik approach. Such people try to set up systems and bring harmony so that everybody gets equal opportunities.
In Tamasik actions, I am the center of the universe and the basic instinct is to try to protect the limited I. There is no endeavor to expand the "I". On the other hand, in the Rajasik movement, "I" is the center of existence and there is a great effort to expand "I". In the Satvik movement, "I" gets substituted by "We". Such people get away with their individual interests and try to bring harmony and set up systems that are fair for all even if the individual loses his powers at the end of the day.
However, in all these three movements of the mind, the center remains this material world. Ignorance prevails. One considers this world to be permanent and tries to either protect "I" or expand "I" or bring harmony for "we". This "I" or we may be limited or wide. For example, a Tamasik person may try to protect only himself while the other may try to protect himself and his family or community. Similarly, a Rajasik person may try to get more powers for himself while somebody may try to get powers for his family or organization. Similarly, a Satvik person may try to bring harmony within his family, while somebody may try to bring harmony within the entire nation.
Whatever the movement, the matter remains the focus. There is a belief in all these three movements that material existence is the most important thing and therefore we need to work for the preservation, promotion, or harmony of material existence. However, spiritual pursuit is quite different from all these. The first step along the spiritual path is the realization of the temporariness of everything in the domain of matter and at the same time to realize the infinite possibilities of the consciousness. While moving along the path, a person realizes that once we connect to the consciousness, we start playing with the matter. It becomes like a board wherein we can draw different pictures and shapes. Tamasik nature appears like holding on to a particular picture on the board and being concerned that it will get deleted. Rajasik nature is like drawing more and more pictures on the board. While Satvik nature seems to allow equal opportunities for everybody to draw pictures on the board.
As one moves along the spiritual path, one realizes that each one of us has his own board with the capacity to hold infinite images, and each one of us has an infinite capacity to draw the images. At the same time, all the images on the board are temporary. So realizing the temporariness of all these images, a spiritual person does not get stuck to any of these images. Rather he works on himself and helps others to develop the awareness of that infinite capacity to draw any image on the board and also to gain awareness of the infinite capacity of the board. Tamasik, Rajasik, and Satvik movements make life stressful because we get fixated on the images on the board that will get anyhow erased sooner or later. Fixation to the temporary gives us fear and stress. While awareness of the capacity of the writer and the board frees us from all these fears and makes life magical.
